Built in 1667 as a private home, the
Allen House was used as a public tavern
during the Revolution. In 1779,
Continental soldiers stationed at the
tavern were surprised and captured
by Loyalists. The site, owned by the
Monmouth County Historical Association,
is furnished as a public
house, interpreting tavern life in the
mid-18th century.
