Lighted for the first time on June 11,
1764, this octagonal tower was the
fifth lighthouse in the colonies and
remains the oldest operating lighthouse
in the United States. It was
occupied by both British and Loyalist
forces during the Revolution, and
was surrounded by an encampment
of white and African-American
Loyalists, who conducted numerous raids. Now operated by the National
Park Service as part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, the lighthouse
was restored to its original splendor in 2000.
