Following the Battle of Red Bank,
defeated Hessian troops used this
house as a regrouping point before
returning to the safety of Philadelphia.
Built in 1726, with a 1788
addition, the Georgian brick building,
is operated as a museum by the
Camden County Historical Society,
and furnished with 18th and 19th
century collections. Public tours are
offered Thursday and Sunday.
The 1765 Hunter-Lawrence House [58 N. Broad St., Woodbury 08096;
Hours Monday, Wednesday and Friday 1 to 4 p.m., and the last Saturday and
Sunday of each month 2 to 5 p.m.; (856) 848-8531] was home to a Continental
Army chaplain. Now the headquarters of the Gloucester County Historical
Society, the museum displays 18 rooms of furnishings and memorabilia
from 17th through 19th century New Jersey. The nearby Woodbury Friends
Meeting House (124 N. Broad St.) occupies a site bought for three pounds
in 1715; the building's west side was built in 1715, and the east side in 1783.
During the Battle of Red Bank, the building was used as a hospital by the
Hessians.
