October Marks Crossroads NHA's 1st Year!
Preservation New Jersey is helping
us celebrate! At the 2007 Preservation Gala on Saturday, September
29, the Sarah P. Fiske award will be presented to the Crossroads of the
American Revolution Association. Come and celebrate with us at The Gala at 6 pm at the Park Avenue Club, Florham Park, NJ.
Message from the President
Kevin Tremble As President of the Crossroads of the American Revolution Association,
I am personally thrilled that the Sarah P. Fiske Award is being given
to us this year. Our founding president, Marguerite Chandler, and our
board worked tirelessly to organize and direct our early efforts.
Crossroads has only been in existence since 2002, so to receive this
honor after just five years -- and almsot three of those
years as a largely volunteer organization -- is a major
accomplishment.
We have quite a bit to be
proud of, but there is still a long way to go. It is a rewarding, but
sometimes uphill challenge to foster the conservation, preservation and
interpretation of New Jersey's Revolutionary War sites and
landscapes. With your support, both financial and vocal, you can
help make our shared vision for our Crossroads of the American
Revolution National Heritage Area a reality.
If you live in New Jersey, you are
likely within minutes, but at most a few hours of one of the hundreds
of New Jersey's Revolutionary War historic sites. Please come and visit
and bring your family and friends. |
| A New Exhibit at the Old Barracks Museum |
Famous
names like Washington, Jefferson and Lafayette are pillars of our
Revoutionary era history. But the current exhibit at the Old Barracks
Museum in the state capitol brings William Richards, a colonial Trenton
entrepreneur, to life. The exhibit, "Remarkable for His Industry" is
based on 21st century archaeological finds in an area of Trenton known
in the 18th century as Lamberton Landing. The artifacts were unearthed
in 2000 during construction of the Route 29 tunnel.
During
the Revolutionary War period, Richards' businesses included a
commercial fishery, stoneware pottery, cooperage, bakery, store and
schooner, as well as interests in shipping and an apothecary.
Among
the many fascinating items in the exhibit are a 1781 newspaper ad
listing nearly 100 different items for sale in Richards' store, and
models of his bake ovens, which were found nearly intact. Find out more
at Old Barracks Museum. |
| Morristown National Historical Park Update |
From Randy Turner, Superintendent
"Since early 2005 I have witnessed the renovation, expansion -
indeed transformation - of the Washington's Headquarters Museum here at
Morristown National Historical Park. My
favorite change is the return of the visitor's entrance to the front
side of the building, as designed by John Russell Pope. My
second favorite is the restoration of six palladium style windows
in the grand auditorium.
As we begin the phased reopening of the museum we have lots of
improvements that will make the Park's history more accessible than
ever before, including: an archival research library, a new elevator, an accessible ramp at the front door, a new gift shop and automatic electric door
More
exciting improvements are on the way, including professional museum
quality exhibits that can rotate and go on the road. Thank you all for
your support. " |

| National Historic Trail Designation for W3R |
Washington's Victory over the British at Yorktown led to the end of the
Revolutionary War. Yorktown also marked the end of an extraordinary 685
mile-long march by more than 7,000 Continental and French forces in
1782 from Newport to Yorktown.
Their route, now designated the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary
Route or W3R for short, is being considered for National Historic Trail
Status by Congress (S. 686 and H.R. 1286). The designation would mark
the first national Revolutionary War historic trail with a major
presence in New Jersey. Ask your Representative to co-sponsor this
legislation. Learn more about W3R-New Jersey and about the entire march to victory at W3R . |
Message from the Executive Director
Cate Litvack
The two years I have spent with the Crossroads Association
have been more challenging, rewarding and exiting than I could have
imagined. In 2005 Governor Codey designated our State Heritage Area
and last fall the President signed legislation creating the
Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area. At
last New Jersey's pivotal role in the American Revolution was
nationally acknowedged.
I'm so looking forward to continuing to build the partnerships that
will help preserve, promote and interpret New Jersey's Revolutionary
War era historic sites and landscapes in the Crossroads of the American Revolution National Heritage Area .
Together we will tell the story of our state's signficant role in the
birth of the United States and help the world - Discover Revolutionary
NJ!.
Your comments and support are so welcome, please keep in touch.

Celebrating the 250th Birthday of the Marquis de Lafayette
Born
September 6, 1757, Lafayette remains one of the Revolutionary War's
most interesting figures. Born into the wealth of French nobility,
Lafayette risked both his life and fortune fighting with
and supplying the Colonial Army. He rose through the ranks to
command troops that kept British General Cornwallis bottled up in
Yorktown until the French fleet, General Washington and the Comte
de Rochambeau arrived to seal the British surrender.
This year
Lafayette College in Easton, PA celebrates the 250th birthday of its
name-sake with a series of special events during the academic year

Endangered Heritage
Scattered among the dense suburban neighborhoods of
New Jersey's northeast corner are a number of historic buildings that
blend into their neighborhoods. The Naugle House, unique among Dutch
stone houses of the period, is one of them.
Little
is known for certain about Mr. Naugle, but he may have been the
paymaster for the Marquis de Lafayette's troops. Lafayette
visited the house in 1824 during his return visit to the United
States.
Currently
the Naugle House is vacant, deteriorating and threatened by a
development plan. Preservation New Jersey has designated the Naugle
House one of their -
