In
New Jersey, the ground we walk on is sacred. Two hundred twenty-five
years ago, New Jersey was the center of
a violent,
vicious civil war between the British military command in Manhattan
and the Rebel capital then in Philadelphia, For eight long, bitter
years, troops and militia on both sides fought their way back
and forth across New Jersey’s landscape. Much of the civilian
population took up arms for one side or the other. Many endeavored
to stay neutral. Father fought son, neighbor fought neighbor,
each destroying, pillaging, and retaliating against the homes,
livelihoods, and families of the other. Washington and his troops
spent nearly half the Revolutionary War in New Jersey. Nowhere
in all 13 colonies was the cost greater to the civilian population.
Nowhere was the suffering of the troops more severe. Nowhere
was liberty bought at a higher price. New Jersey was the
Crossroads of the American Revolution.
