Ask Legislators to Replenish the Garden State Preservation Trust in 2007!

The Garden State Preservation Trust has made New Jersey a leader in preserving open space, historic sites and farmland over the past decade. It will soon run out of money.

New Jersey continues to face intense development pressure, losing approximately 50 acres of open space a day. And too often open spaces and historic sites that have been protected suffer from insufficient funding and are therefore poorly maintained, understaffed and inaccessible to the public.

In order to ensure that New Jersey continues to preserve our treasures and that all residents can enjoy well-maintained, accessible natural areas in their communities, we must renew and strengthen the Trust in 2007.

Please write to your State representatives and the Governor urging them to renew and strengthen the Trust. It’s a wise investment in our communities.

Thanks for your support!

CASHING IN ON HISTORY

  • States around the country are making money off of history.
  • Historic tax credit programs, found in 28 states, provide property owners with economic incentives to revitalize older neighborhoods and reuse historic structures by providing state tax credits for their rehabilitation. These tax credit programs have been found to be a boon for state economies.
  • Despite its wealth of historic buildings and places, New Jersey has no such tax credit. However, a bill currently working its way through the state Legislature would finally provide such a tax credit program in the Garden State.

USING HISTORIC PRESERVATION TO NURTURE SMART GROWTH & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The Historic Property Reinvestment Act (HPRA), currently working its way through the New Jersey State Legislature, would provide home- owners or businesses with an economic incentive to revitalize older neighborhoods and reuse historic structures by providing a state tax credit for their rehabilitation.

For a detailed look at the connection between historic preservation, smart growth, and economic development, read New Jersey Future’s policy brief, “Historic Preservation & Smart Growth,” available at
http://www.njfuture.org.

For more information about HPRA, talking points, case studies, and a model municipal resolution, visit Preservation New Jersey’s website at www.preservationnj.org/hpra
